More than two months after Fisher-Price recalled 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play sleepers, the company is recalling an inclined sleeper accessory that was included with some play yards.

About 71,000 Fisher-Price Ultra-Lite Day & Night Play Yards are affected, according to the voluntary recall notice posted Thursday on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website. The inclined sleeper accessory is the only part of the product that is being recalled.

“Infant fatalities have been reported while using other inclined sleep products, after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained, or under other circumstances,” the notice states.

Unlike the more than 5.4 million infant sleepers recalled in April including 700,000 Kids II sleepers, Thursday’s recall notice says there have been no incidents or injuries reported.

According to a Consumer Reports investigation, at least 50 babies have died in infant inclined sleep products. Days after the consumer magazine reported in April that more than 30 infants died in the Rock ‘n Play, it was recalled. More deaths have been reported since the investigation.

“Today’s recall is shockingly overdue,” said William Wallace, manager of home and safety policy for Consumer Reports, in a statement. “At the very least, it should’ve happened 10 weeks ago when the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper was finally recalled.”

For this recall, Fisher-Price said in a statement that it approached the safety commission “to initiate a voluntary recall of the inclined sleeper accessory included with all models of the Ultra-Lite Day & Night Play Yard, due to safety concerns raised about inclined sleep products.”

Advocates including the American Academy of Pediatrics have urged the safety commission and lawmakers to eliminate the inclined sleep product category completely. Inclined sleepers conflict with what the doctor’s group of 67,000 children’s health providers nationwide recommends for safe sleeping, which is putting infants to sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface in a bare crib, bassinet or play yard.

Earlier this month, Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Rep. Tony Cardenas, D-Calif., introduced bills to ban infant sleeping devices with an incline of greater than 10 degrees.

Recalled Fisher-Price products

The model numbers of affected Ultra-Lite Day & Night Play Yards are CBV60, CHP86, CHR06, CJK24 and DJD11.

“Consumers should stop using the inclined sleeper accessory immediately. They should contact Fisher-Price immediately for a refund or voucher,” Fisher-Price said in its statement. “Please note, we are not recalling the play yard itself or the changing station clutch accessory or carry bag – customers can continue using these accessories.”

The portable play yards were sold from October 2014 through June 2019 for between $90 and $110 at retailers nationwide.
