Man fatally shot near Des Plaines high school

A person of interest is being interviewed in the shooting death of a man Monday morning across the street from a high school in north suburban Des Plaines.

Martin V. Chavez, 54, was fatally shot about 8:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Oakton Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Maine West High School is directly across the street from that address.

An autopsy released Tuesday found Chavez died of a multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Des Plaines police commander Chris Mierzwa said the department is investigating the shooting and that there was no danger to the community. He declined to comment further.
