About 9 p.m., officers responding to reports of shots fired at a home in the 200 block of North Colfax Street found Jermaine Salazar, 46, wounded in a driveway, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office.

Earlier, a man arrived at the home and got into an “altercation” with Salazar, the sheriff’s office said. The man opened fire and struck Salazar several times.

Salazar was taken to Methodist Hospital in Gary, where he died, the Lake County coroner’s office said in a statement. Salazar lived in the same block where he was shot. His death was ruled a homicide.

The suspect shooter was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said. Charges are pending.
