Shootings within city limits over the weekend left at least three peopledead and 36 others wounded.
The most violent period was from 5 p.m. Friday to Saturday morning, when 22 people were shot in a rash of gun violence during the first 12 hours of the weekend.
The total is less than last week, when shootings left 8 dead and 44 wounded in the city’s most violent weekend so far this year, which prompted a response from Mayor Lightfoot and CPD Supt. Eddie Johnson.
As a result, police this weekend saturated the Englewood, Austin, Harrison, Auburn-Gresham and Grand Central districts, among others, to address “ongoing gang conflicts” that contributed to the recent violence, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
From Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday, 36 people were arrested on gun-related charges and 89 illegal guns were confiscated, Guglielmi said on Twitter. Additionally, four people were arrested for several armed robberies and a man was charged with shooting an 18-year-old in Old Town.
In the weekend latest fatal gun violence incident, 30-year-old Marcel Hannah was killed Sunday in Woodlawn after an argument.
He was walking about 2:56 a.m. in the 6600 block of South Evans Avenue when he started arguing with people in a blue Impala, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. One of them pulled out a gun and opened fire.
A bullet struck him in the head he and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office hasn’t released details on his death.
On Saturday, a man was shot and killed in an apartment in Englewood.
About 2:20 p.m., the 40-year-old was in the 5500 block of South Perry Avenue when he was shot in the chest and leg, according to police. He died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
A few hours earlier, a shooting in Little Village left one man dead and another hurt.
Juan Agredano, 42, and a 49-year-old man were in an alley about 2:42 a.m. in the 3000 block of South Trumbull Avenue, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Someone in a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and opened fire.
Agredano was struck multiple times in the back, and later died at Mount Sinai Hospital, authorities said. The other man was taken to the same hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
In non-fatal gun violence, a man and a woman were wounded in a drive-by attack in Pilsen.
They were in a vehicle about 5 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Union Avenue when someone in a light-colored vehicle pulled up and opened fire, police said.
The man was hit in the chest and arm and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. The woman was struck in the arm and stabilized at the same hospital, police said.
Less than an hour earlier, four people were wounded in a shooting in Humboldt Park on the West Side.
They got into a fight with a stranger about 4:20 a.m. at a restaurant in the 3500 block of West North Avenue, Chicago police said.
When the altercation turned physical, the four left the restaurant, got in a Jeep Cherokee and the person they were arguing with fired shots at the car, police said. The Jeep caught fire and slammed into a parked car.
A 30-year-old man was hit in the arm, leg and chest, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
A 45-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition with a shoulder wound, along with a 43-year-old man hit in the back. His condition was stabilized.
Additionally, a 24-year-old man declined medical treatment for a graze wound to the hand, police said.
At least 30 others were wounded in separate shootings between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday. Two people also suffered self-inflicted gunshot wounds over the weekend.
