A 33-year-old man fatally shot Monday evening in the Bridgeport neighborhood was possibly being carjacked, police said.

Shuai Guan was shot in his chest about 6 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene in the 3000 block of South Union Avenue, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Police were unable to speak with the victim, but surveillance video from the area appears to show he was shot after refusing to give his car keys to robbers who confronted him, a police spokeswoman said.

The victim was exiting his car when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside appeared to ask for his keys, police said. The man refused, called 911 and reported that he was being robbed by someone in a white Jeep.

While on the phone with 911, he walked away and was followed by two cars, police said. People inside the cars then opened fire at him.

Officers responded to the call of the robbery and a ShotSpotter notification of three gunshots in that block and found the victim on the ground, police said.

The victim was a concealed-carry license holder, but a police spokeswoman said a police report did not say if he had a gun when he was shot.

Guan lived on the same block where he was shot, the medical examiner’s office said.

No arrest has been made, police said.

Cops have responded to 1,335 carjackings so far this year — a sharp increase from the 514 carjackings reported all of last year, according to police data.

On Dec. 3, retired Chicago firefighter Dwain Williams was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with would-be carjackers in Morgan Park on the Far South Side.
