A 30-year-old man was fatally shot by police responding to an armed robbery at a gas station Sunday morning in south suburban Dolton.

Two officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at a Shell gas station at 1445 E. Sibley Blvd. about 5 a.m. and observed a man pointing a pistol at someone outside the business, according to Dolton police. Both officers drew their weapons, and when the robber saw them, he pointed his gun at them.

The officers then shot Donte L. Johnson, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:18 a.m.

An autopsy Monday found Johnson died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 2800 block of West 140th Place in Blue Island.

The robbery victim, whom police said Johnson hit in the head with the butt of his gun during the attempted robbery, was taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, and received stitches.
