The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating after a man died early Thursday when he was pulled through an industrial machine in southwest suburban Plainfield.

Officers responded shortly after 1:30 a.m. to a call of a workplace accident at Coilplus Inc., 14023 Coil Plus Dr., according to a statement from Plainfield police.

Carlos Rivera, 50, was was caught in a steel baler, authorities said.

Rivera, of Joliet, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:15 p.m., according to the Will County coroner’s office. An autopsy Thursday found he died of multiple injuries he suffered in the industrial mishap.

Police said the incident is being treated as an accidental death and the investigation is ongoing.

OSHA has opened an investigation into the fatality, spokeswoman Rhonda Burke said Thursday afternoon. There have been no previous OSHA inspections at the Coilplus facility.
