WASHINGTON–President Barack Obama on Friday nominates a new Defense Secretary – Ashton Carter – then meets with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan and then huddles with a group of newly elected governors, including Illinois Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2014

In the morning, the President will make a personnel announcement in the Roosevelt Room; the Vice President will also attend. The President’s statement will be pooled press.

Later in the morning, the President will meet with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan to consult on regional issues, including efforts to counter ISIL and find a political solution in Syria, provide humanitarian assistance to refugees from the conflicts in Iraq and Syria, and take steps to calm tensions in Jerusalem. The Vice President will also attend. There will be a pool spray at the bottom of this meeting in the Oval Office.

In the afternoon, the President will meet with newly elected governors from Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas to discuss the ways in which the Administration can partner with states to promote economic opportunity for middle-class Americans. The President and the incoming governors will discuss how we can build on our growing economy by creating more jobs and ensuring that every American who works hard has an opportunity to succeed. There will be a pool spray at the top of this meeting in the Oval Office.
