An extra-alarm fire was extinguished at an industrial warehouse on the Far South Side Monday evening as crews were finally able to bring water to the scene nearly two hours after the blaze was reported.

It started about 3:30 p.m. on the roof of a four-story “old steel mill building” in the 10700 block of South Burley Avenue, on the west side of the Calumet River, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

A third alarm was called for the fire along with a hazardous materials response, bringing about 15 firetrucks to the blaze, officials said. There aren’t any fire hydrants in the area, and firefighters weren’t able to find a water source a block away until about 5:15 p.m.

The fire was put out shortly before 6 p.m. No one was hurt, officials said. The cause is under investigation.
