6-year-old girl critically wounded in Logan Square shooting

A 6-year-old girl was critically wounded Monday night in a shooting in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

About 8:10 p.m., the girl was outside of a home during a party in the 2100 block of North Bingham when a vehicle drove up and someone inside started shooting, according to Chicago Police. One resident said the girl lived on the block where the shooting occurred.

She suffered a gunshot wound to the back and a relative drove her to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center. She was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday she remained in critical condition, police said.

Neighbors said they heard between eight to 10 shots in about 15 seconds.

A longtime resident said that neighbors had called police about a dozen times on the house near the scene of the shooting for gang activity.

Another neighbor who lives on the block said she had just returned home from work when she heard the crackle of gunfire — nine shots in all, she said.

“There were a lot of kids playing outside at the time,” said the woman, who didn’t want her name used. She said her own children were playing in her basement at the time.

The woman said the neighborhood has been the scene of a turf war between rival gangs, with each side tagging and re-tagging walls. The woman said the address where Monday’s shooting occurred has experienced at least two other shootings since 2015.
