Charges have been filed against a man who escaped after firing shots at police officers Tuesday in northwest Indiana, although the suspect remains at large Friday afternoon.
Kevin S. Brown Jr., 28, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of attempted battery with a deadly weapon, and two counts of resisting law enforcement, according to Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.
Officers went to the 5800 block of Kennedy Terrace in Gary to take Damond Gregory into custody Tuesday, according to Westerfield.
While the officers were conducting surveillance just after 10 p.m., Gregory exited an apartment building with another man, later identified as Brown, Westerfield said. The men got into a vehicle and as officers approached, Brown got out of the passenger side and immediately opened fire.
After a brief standoff, Gregory surrendered to SWAT officers, Westerfield said. Brown had already been taken into custody, but during the standoff with Gregory, he escaped despite being handcuffed.
“It is still unclear as to why Brown fired at officers,” Westerfield said.
Brown is described as a 6-foot, 165-pound black man, last seen wearing a dark, patterned, hooded sweatshirt; black jeans and gym shoes, police said. He hangs out in the Aetna and Glen Ryan neighborhoods, as well as the Lake Shore Dunes apartment complex.
Police said Brown should be considered armed and dangerous, and the public is warned not to approach him.
