With organized team activities going on at Halas Hall, the Bears waived second-year offensive lineman Tayo Fabuluje on Wednesday.
It was the first time general manager Ryan Pace cut one of his own draft selections.
Fabuluje was Pace’s final pick of the 2015 draft (sixth round, No. 183) and considered a project from the get-go out of Texas Christian.
There were concerns about Fabuluje’s weight coming out of college — he was listed at 342 pounds this week — but Pace said after the 2015 draft that he liked his athleticism, quick feet and ability to handle different positions.
Fabuluje’s ability to deal with adversity also appealed to the Bears. Fabuluje, who was born in Nigeria, missed three years of college football because of separate stints at Brigham Young and TCU and his family situation.
While at TCU, Fabuluje’s mother was incarcerated for theft. When he was five years old, his father was deported for his involvement in truck theft ring. Fabuluje sat out the 2013 season in college to work and provide for his siblings.
Fabuluje’s main issue with the Bears was that he struggled to stay on the field for various reasons.
He dealt with asthma and weight issues during his first training camp and was later suspended four games during the regular season after mistakenly taking an appetite suppressant that contained a banned amphetamine.
Fabuluje, who was on the field for only two snaps last season, wasn’t present during last week’s open practice because of an illness. He also wasn’t at practice on Wednesday.
Limited approach
Safety Adrian Amos has been limited during OTAs after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder this offseason.
“It’s a precaution,” Amos said. “It’s just getting out here, getting a lot of mental reps and getting back into it slowly.”
Missing men
The Bears continue to be cautious with outside linebacker Pernell McPhee, who underwent offseason knee surgery. He did not practice during the open OTA.
Receiver Alshon Jeffery, as expected, also wasn’t present.
