WASHINGTON – The Cubs are more than halfway to All-Star selection history.
With voting scheduled to end two weeks from Thursday, the Cubs continue to lead in balloting at five positions – including all four infield spots.
First baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Ben Zobrist, third baseman Kris Bryant and shortstop Addison Russell have led at their positions all three times updated leader lists have been released, including Wednesday.
If that holds, they would join the 1963 Cardinals as the only team in history to put an entire infield in a starting lineup for the All-Star game.
“It’d be quite an achievement, man,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “I definitely wil watch.”
Meanwhile, Dexter Fowler continues to lead in National League outfield voting, just ahead of the Nationals’ Bryce Harper, with the Cubs’ right fielder Jason Heyward in fourth place, trying to catch No. 3 Yoenis Cespedes for the last outfield starting spot.
And Jake Arrieta (10-1, 1.86 ERA) is a leading candidate to start on the mound.
