Showing spirit to keep a school open

It’s not often I get to hear Christmas carols while out on assignment.

But I did Wednesday night, and before I knew it, I was singing along because one can’t help but get caught up in the spirit of the people of St. Florian School.

St. Florian’s sits in the middle of Hegewisch, a place where it’s evident the residents take pride in their Far Southeast Side neighborhood. There’s not a scrap of litter on the streets, lawns are well-manicured and Christmas lights shine on many a house.

Right now the community is pulling for St. Florian’s School as it tries, with the help of Santa Claus, to raise enough money to keep its school going.
