President Barack Obama has a message for his critics who say he’s been upstaged by Russian President Vladimir Putin: His sanctions strategy against Russia is working.

During an interview on CNN that that aired Sunday, Obama said all you have to do is look at Russia’s floundering economy.

“There was a spate of stories about how he is the chess master and outmaneuvering the West and outmaneuvering Mr. Obama and this and that and the other,” Obama said on CNN. “And right now, he’s presiding over the collapse of his currency, a major financial crisis and a huge economic contraction.”

“That doesn’t sound like somebody who has rolled me or the United States of America,” he said.
