Naperville Sun’s three things to know

SHARE Naperville Sun’s three things to know

1. Metea Valley sprint relays on fire. Metea Valley has been infused with young sprinting talent as underclassmen Alonzo Taylor and Jordan Cagigal have powered the Mustangs’ sprint relays during the early outdoor season. Kelvin Girantt II and Josh Kline team with the duo in the 800-meter relay, while Rod Barnett, Matt Coley and Brendan McGrath — with Cagigal as the anchor — have bolstered the 1,600 quartet. The units have three combined outdoor invitational titles thus far.

2. Harris, Hubona in grudge match. Waubonsie Valley returning state qualifier Jon Harris and Benet senior Stephen Hubona were the class among throwers at the Gus Scott Invitational last week. The former exceeded 54 feet to claim the shot put at Naperville North, but Hubona reversed the 1-2 places in the discus with a championship throw of 163-6, five inches better than Harris’ mark in the event.

3. Central mile relay looking good. Naperville Central is more than ready to defend its All-State status in the 1,600 relay. With open 400 champion Sam Bransby and Michael Jopes — runner-up in both hurdles races at West Aurora — complementing Kyle Hilton and Matt Meier, the Redhawks’ unit won the John Bell Invitational finale in 3 minutes, 27.44 seconds.
