RIVER FOREST — Trinity finally got a chance to act as Goliath against an opposing David, but the Blazers never had to fear a slingshot.
Taking on Parker, a co-ed school of 327 students, the Blazers quickly pulled away for the 25-8, 25-11 nonconference victory in Oak Park. What began as a close match ended in a commanding victory.
“We stayed more consistent and aggressive with serves,” Dimitra Gritzanis, a second-year varsity junior, said. “We’ve done really well against big schools we didn’t think we’d be able to beat. We’ve come a long way since last year.”
Coach Ken Uhlir has already doubled the victory total of Trinity (10-6) in his first high school head coaching assignment. The Blazers finished 5-17 a year ago.
Sierra Brown registered three kills and Delaney Doolin contributed five kills and three digs. Trinity’s Maura Ryan, Sam Parra, Sierra Brown and Amanda Lowe earned extended playing time.
“They played well. It was good to see,” Uhlir said, pleased with the team’s passing and serving.
Colonels head coach Sara Farias said the biggest challenge was finding replacements for some key
starters who were away on a school trip. The JV players who took their place had only one day to practice with the varsity.
“It was a short time to transition,” Farias said. “They rolled with the punches and did well with stepping into the new positions and the new lineup.”
