A landlord raped his tenant when he went to collect rent money at the woman’s South Deering apartment over the weekend, Cook County prosecutors said Wednesday.

The victim’s 16-year-old sister was also home when Martell McDonald stopped by to pick up the rent Sunday evening. But the teenager left the apartment, in the 10500 block of South Oglesby, to get a phone she wanted to sell McDonald, Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Keating said.

When the older sibling, 21, went to her room to change her clothes and get the rent money, McDonald followed her and went inside, prosecutors said.

There, McDonald forced the woman’s face down on her bed and allegedly raped her.

The woman ran to a friend’s house to tell her what happened while McDonald went to the bathroom, Keating said. Police were called and McDonald, 24, of the 2600 block of West 21st, was arrested at the scene.

The towel was collected by police as were the results of a rape kit, Keating said.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered McDonald held on $100,000 bail Wednesday.
