URBANA, Ill. — Members of the union that represents University of Illinois faculty who are not on a tenure track have begun a two-day strike they hope will help win a contract with the school.
Shawn Gilmore is president of the Nontenure-Track Faculty Coalition Local 6546. He said Tuesday that it is not clear yet how many of the union’s roughly 500 members are not working Tuesday. But he said a majority voted to support a strike.
Some union members picketed around the university’s English Building Tuesday morning.
Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The two sides are trying to find common ground on a contract they’ve been negotiating since October 2014.
The union plans to strike Wednesday and then return to work.
