“Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding,” the interactive show that entertained tourists and employed Chicago actors in the ’90s and beyond, is returning — this time in an actual church.
Performances will begin Sept. 22 with the titular couple exchanging vows at Resurrection Church, 3309 N. Seminary. The mock reception, complete with champagne toast and buffet dinner, will follow a block away at the Chicago Theater Works venue that hosts its similarly interactive “We Gotta Bingo,” renamed Vinnie Black’s Colosseum for the occasion.
Audience members are treated as guests and mingle with the bride, the groom and their friends and family in the show, which originated in New York in the 1980s. The original New York producers are presenting this production in conjunction with Chicago Theater Works.
In Chicago, “Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding” opened at Piper’s Alley in 1993 and ran an impressive 16 years, with occasional drop-ins by ’60s pop singer Frankie Avalon. Paul Strioli, a former Chicago cast member, is directing the new production.
