A swim ban was put in place at Chicago’s beaches Sunday following heavy rains across the area.

Due to the rain, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District opened the lock at Willmette and the Chicago River downtown, according to a statement from the Chicago Park District.

The swim ban will remain in place until water testing shows low levels of bacteria, according to the statement. While swimming is banned, the beaches remain open for use.

The city of Evanston also closed its beaches for swimming Sunday due to bacteria levels.
