A woman was found stabbed to death in her home in northwest Indiana early Tuesday, authorities said.

Officers were called about 6 a.m. to a report of a bleeding woman 7500 block of Alexander Avenue in Hammond, according to Hammond police.

The victim, 25-year-old Lucia Gonzales, was found dead in the kitchen when police arrived, but the children in the home were “safe and unharmed,” according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

She died of stab wounds and her death was ruled a homicide, the coroner’s office said.

“Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there is no indication that the public is in any danger,” Hammond Police Chief John Doughty said in the statement.
