A 16-year-old boy was shot dead Thursday evening in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

About 6:30 p.m., officers found Joseph Smith suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest in the 800 block of North Waller, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the Lawndale neighborhood.

Area North detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.
