A 17-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder in an attack last week on a 21-year-old man in the North Side Uptown neighborhood.

Bryan Santos, of the West Rogers Park neighborhood, is charged with attempted first-degree murder in the March 8 shooting, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

About 12:10 p.m., Santos followed the 21-year-old from Harry S. Truman College, prosecutors and Chicago Police said. The 21-year-old, who lives in McKinley park, was a student at the college, and Santos had previously attended the school, but had been kicked out over an earlier fight with the same man.

Santos, wearing a black hooded jacket and a black face mask, confronted the man about 2:10 p.m. in the 4500 block of North Magnolia, prosecutors said. He took out a gun and asked, “Do you want it now or later?”

Santos hit the 21-year-old in the face with the gun, leading the man to take out brass knuckles and strike Santos, prosecutors said. After being struck, Santos fired, striking the man and continuing to shoot him when he fell to the ground.

The man was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with gunshot wounds to his chest, leg, back and buttocks, authorities said. Santos ran off.

Officers responding to a trespassing report a half hour later found Santos on a back porch in the 6000 block of North Claremont and took him into custody on suspicion of trespassing, prosecutors said. A black, hooded jacket was found nearby and an investigation later linked him to the shooting. He was also identified by the 21-year-old as the person who shot him.

Police records show Santos was taken into custody Wednesday in the same block before he was charged with the shooting.

Santos was denied bail at a court hearing Thursday and was scheduled to return to court April 4.
