Bears’ Akiem Hicks, Prince Amukamara questionable for game vs. Chiefs

Hicks, who came back from a dislocated elbow last week, has practiced in full all three days. Amukamara was limited Thursday and Friday.

The Bears talked all week as though defensive lineman Akiem Hicks would play Sunday against the Chiefs. Hicks, who returned from injured reserve last week, said he wants to play, too.

On Friday, however, the Bears surprisingly listed Hicks as questionable. He had participated fully in all three practices this week.

Coach Matt Nagy said Hicks’ status didn’t represent a change in the Bears’ thinking.

‘‘The expectation is that he’s going to play,’’ Nagy said. ‘‘It’s just more of a managing thing.’’

Hicks returned from a dislocated elbow to face the Packers in Week 15. He was in obvious pain the whole game, going to the injury tent twice because of the elbow problem.

‘‘It’s what you expect, knowing what kind of person he is, the leadership qualities and . . . his play,’’ outside linebacker Khalil Mack said. ‘‘He was able to get in there and make some noise early and often, so that’s what you expect from him.’’

The Bears also listed cornerback Prince Amukamara as questionable. He was limited in practice Thursday and Friday after coming back quickly from a hamstring injury suffered Thanksgiving Day. He missed the game Dec. 5 against the Cowboys and rotated with second-year player Kevin Toliver against the Packers. In the third quarter, though, Toliver took over for good.

Amukamara said he understands why some would wonder whether the Bears, now that they’re out of the playoff hunt, might be more interested in seeing what Toliver can do. Amukamara’s contract runs through next season, though the Bears could part with him and only have to pay $1 million in dead cap money in 2020.

‘‘The true narrative is my reps are being managed,’’ Amukamara said. ‘‘Just being smart about it. But I’m not naive.

‘‘But Coach said everyone’s being evaluated — starters, coaches included. I’m here. I’m fully checked in. I can’t worry about that. That’s for the decision-makers.’’

The Bears also ruled out receiver Taylor Gabriel (concussion) and right tackle Bobby Massie (ankle), who haven’t practiced in weeks.
