WASHINGTON–Should cameras be allowed when the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments next year on President Obama’s health care law? I wonder if this is the case to do it.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Ia.) are pushing for cameras.
From Pelosi: “Today, I join my colleague Senator Grassley in a bipartisan call for the Supreme Court proceedings on the Affordable Care Act to be publicly available through real-time video and audio. When the Affordable Care Act is placed before the highest court in our country, all Americans will have a stake in the debate; therefore, all Americans should have access to it. Openness and transparency are essential to the success of our democracy, and in this historic debate, we must ensure the ability of our citizens to take part.”
The court set an unusually long time for oral arguments on the Affordable Care Act
The justices will listen to 5 1/2 hours over two days in March or April 2012. A decision is expected in June. No matter the outcome, the decision will be a factor in the presidential campaign.
