WASHINGTON–Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) has been tapped for a House leadership post–just three years after being elected to Congress. Quigley will serve as an assistant whip for the Democratic leadership, named to the position by House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.)
A whip helps leaders determine who is for or against a measure before there is a vote. Whips are used by both parties.
Quigley was elected in 2009 to replace Rahm Emanuel after he resigned his Fifth Congressional District post to become chief of staff for President Barack Obama.
From Quigley’s office: “Last year, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform announced Quigley as the Ranking Member for the Subcommittee on TARP, Financial Services, and Bailouts of Public and Private Programs. This appointment came just 21 months after he was elected to Congress, the fewest of any ranking member on the committee. The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over financial and monetary policy, banking, housing, and insurance regulation, financial crisis and rescues, and tax policy.
“In addition to Oversight and Government Reform, Quigley also serves on the Judiciary Committee. He co-founded the Transparency Caucus to promote accountability in Washington and has emerged as a leader on bipartisanship, ethics, and fiscal responsibility. He has continued his series of “Reinventing Government” reports, which he began during his decade on the Cook County Board. The new reports outline steps to improve budgeting and include detailed recommendations to save the federal government $2 trillion over the next ten years.”
