Two people were killed in a head-on crash Saturday night in Fremont Township along Fairfield Road, north of Route 60.

At about 9:05 p.m., Lake County sheriff’s deputies responded to a three-car crash. Officers determined a Ford E350 driven by a 51-year-old man was traveling southbound on Fairfield Road, north of Route 60, when he crossed the median into the northbound lanes and struck a Honda Odyssey driven by a 42-year-old man from Hainesville, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The Ford then struck another vehicle headed northbound, a Kia Forte driven by 56-year-old Barbara Gaulke of Ingleside, police and the Lake County coroner’s office said.

Gaulke and her passenger, 64-year-old Sandra Forscht of Round Lake Beach, were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The preliminary results of autopsies indicated both women died of blunt-force injuries from the crash, but a final determination on their causes and manners of death is pending the results of toxicology tests and further investigation, according to the coroner’s office.

The drivers of the Ford and Honda both had non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, the sheriff’s office said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
