15-year-old boy found dead after Austin fire

A 15-year-old boy was found dead after a fire early Saturday in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

At 1:25 a.m., officers responded to a call of a refuse fire in the 5500 block of Cortez Street, according to Chicago Police.

When officers arrived at the scene they discovered a burned body, police said.

The body was identified as 15-year-old Demetrius Griffin, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His home address was not known as of Tuesday morning.

An autopsy did not rule on his cause and manner of death pending further studies, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police issued an alert Monday night asking for help locating the suspect, who may be seeking medical treatment for burns suffered while setting the fire.
