A man was fatally shot in the face early Monday in the Northwest Side Belmont Cragin neighborhood, police said.

The 26-year-old man was standing in an alley with friends in the 2100 block of North Merrimac about 12:15 a.m. when someone walked up, yelled gang slogans and opened fire, police said.

He was shot in the face and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality.
