Hinsdale South hit the ground running against Nazareth and never looked back in its 2A regional final match. The Hornets (11-9) kept the offensive pressure on the Roadrunners (10-6-2) from start to finish in a 7-1 blowout. The Hornets kept the Roadrunners’ defense on their heels with long, precise passes and consistently outran them on both sides of the field.

“We came in today and we had a good feeling and everything really clicked for us,” Hornets coach Pat Wolf said.

The Hornets scored quickly on a breakaway by junior Brenda Maugeri in the sixth minute and added another by freshman Julie Vezzani in the tenth minute. The Hornets picked up two more in the final ten minutes of the first half from senior Kerry Just and sophomore Jessica Koziol.

“We came in with a lot of energy today and we came in with a lot of passion,” Maugeri said. “We really wanted this victory today.”

Maugeri picked up where she left off in the second half with a pair of goals in 90 seconds early in the second half. Freshman Sara Puz put the slaughter rule in play with a goal in the 15th minute.

Senior Gianna Milaro had the Roadrunners’ best scoring choice on a breakaway in the first half, but her point-blank shot was stopped by junior goalie Vanessa Niestrom.

“We had our chances in the first half and we didn’t convert. We didn’t do our jobs,” Roadrunners coach John Nikchevich said.

The Hornets will play St. Francis in the sectional semifinal at Riverside-Brookfield on Wednesday.
