Warren breezes by Zion-Benton

THE SKINNY

Warren’s defense held Zion-Benton to 93 total yards and picked off three passes in a 31-0 whitewash of rival Zion-Benton on Friday in a North Suburban Lake contest that moved the host Blue Devils to 3-1. Zion remains winless.

TURNING POINT

Down 14-0 late in the first half, Zion-Benton’s Kyree McLean picked off a pass and set up the Bees at the Warren 18 with 59 seconds left. Two running plays lost a yard, and Z-B quarterback Doug Gates was called for intentional grounding on third down. Zion couldn’t get its fourth-down play off before time expired. That was the Bee’s best chance of scoring.

THE STAR

Warren running back Maxwell Sorby carried 18 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on an 8-yard run to open the scoring and on a 20-yard in the third quarter that made it 21-0. On the second touchdown, he rushed for all 47 yards of the drive.

BY THE NUMBERS

Warren quarterback Andrew Nickell was 7 of 14 passing for 205 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Both scoring strikes were to Caleb Reams on plays of 41 and 12 yards. Gates was 6-of-12 for 64 yards and three picks.

QUOTABLE

“Any time you can shut out someone in your conference, it’s good. There are some things we have to clean up, like penalties (Warren had eight for 90 yards). I thought Sorby had a nice night. He ran hard and created some things for us in the third quarter.” — Warren coach Dave Mohapp.
