3-alarm fire damages 3 buildings near Eisenhower Expy.

Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze Thursday in which propane tanks exploded, ultimately damaging three West Side buildings near the Eisenhower Expy.

Flames were shooting out the roof of a commercial structure in the 3900 block of West Harrison, according to Chicago Fire Media.

Crews responded about 3:30 p.m., and the fire was elevated to a three-alarm fire, dispatch reports said.

The fire was under control as of about 4:45 p.m., dispatch reports said.

The fire damaged two businesses — Harris Ice Company and L.P.I. Products, a metal fabrication company — and a two-story residential building, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Hazardous materials crews also responded to the scene, where propane tanks exploded inside a building, Fire Media said. No injuries were reported.

The buildings are about a block south of the Eisenhower Expy., and drivers could see thick smoke from the roadway.

The ramp from the inbound Eisenhower to Independence Boulevard was temporarily closed as crews responded, but has since reopened, according to Illinois State Police.
