A west suburbanman died Thursday afternoon, two weeks after he crashed a motorized scooter in southwest suburban Plainfield.
A few minutes before 3 p.m. on May 1, a 21-year-old man was sleeping in his second-floor bedroom in the 1800 block of Arbor Gate Drive when he heard a scooter, according to Joliet police.
He looked out the window and saw his friend riding a blue 2004 Yamaha scooter, police said. A few moments later, he heard a crash.
He ran outside and saw the scooter on the ground and his friend lying on the ground bleeding from his head, police said.
The rider, 20-year-old Sean T. McGrail, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, police said.
Police said it appears McGrail struck a parked 2002 Honda Accord and fell over, striking his head on the concrete. He had been wearing a helmet, but it was not secured properly and was not on his head after the crash.
McGrail, who lived nearby in Plainfield, died two weeks later at the hospital at 5:34 p.m. on May 14, according to police and the Will County coroner’s office.
His cause and manner of death were pending final review of medical records and police reports.
