The White Sox designated right-hander Hector Noesi for assignment on Thursday and recalled right-hander Scott Carroll from Class AAA Charlotte.

Noesi, 28, signed for $1.95 million after going 8-15 with a 4.80 ERA in 32 starts for the Sox last season. He was something of a reclamation project for pitching coach Don Cooper, but this year he is 0-4 with a 6.89 ERA. Noesi was replaced in the starting rotation by Carlos Rodon.

Carroll, a 30-year-old sinkerballer, is 3-2 with a 2.37 ERA over 30 1/3 innings at AAA Charlotte. He struck out 18 and held opponents to a .219 average in six starts. Carroll was 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA over eight relief appearances with the Sox from April 26-May 28, and was disappointed when he was sent down.

“It was very disappointing,” he said. “Any time you do a job that you’re asked to do and then you perform at that level that you’re capable of and what’s expected of you and the numbers don’t shake out in your way, it’s kind of disappointing. But you just have to go with it and keep my innings up and pitch well and get back up here.”

Carroll is 6-11 with a 4.60 ERA in 34 games including 19 startsover two seasons with the Sox.

The Sox 40-man roster is at 39.
