The first novel by Chicago author Gillian Flynn also is the one that’s taken the longest to reach the screen. But a long-simmering deal is coming together that would make “Sharp Objects” a reality, with an Oscar nominee in the lead role.

Amy Adams (“American Hustle,” “Man of Steel”) has signed to star as the reporter returning to her hometown to cover the murders of two girls, the Hollywood trades report. The production is envisioned as a short-run TV series and is being shopped around to cable channels and streaming services.

“Dallas Buyers Club” and “Wild” director Jean-Marc Vallee is on board to direct the project, based on the novel Flynn published in 2006, six years before her breakout “Gone Girl.” Marti Noxon of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “UnREAL” fame wrote the script.

Another Flynn creation, the short story “The Grownup,” is headed for the big screen following a deal announced last week.
