A 32-year-old man was fatally struck by a car after a fight in the River North neighborhood early Sunday.

Marques Gaines got into a fight with another person, who hit him in the head about 4:20 a.m., sending him falling onto the street near Hubbard and State, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A Ford then ran over Gaines, and he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:14 a.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Gaines lived in the 1400 block of West Chicago.

An autopsy Monday did not rule on Gaines’ cause and manner of death, with results pending further investigation.

The driver stayed at the scene and wasn’t charged or ticketed. The other person in the fight walked away and wasn’t in custody as of Sunday morning.

CPD’s Major Accident Investigations unit is handling the case.
