A person of interest has been released without charges in the stabbing death of a 56-year-old man Monday morning in the South Side Chatham neighborhood after police determined the stabbing was self-defense.

Derrick Simpson was stabbed in the chest in the 800 block of East 81st Street at 11:30 a.m., police said. Simpson was in a fight with another man, who stabbed him, police said.

Simpson, who lived in the same block, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead at 12:16 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Officers were questioning a person of interest, but a law enforcement source said Tuesday afternoon that person has been released without charges because he acted in self-defense.
