Police have opened a double homicide investigation after an elderly couple was found dead inside their home Friday morning in west suburban Berwyn.

Officers responded about 5:30 a.m. to a “call of two people down” at a home in the 3100 block of South Oak Park Avenue, according to Berwyn police.

Ira L. Moore, a 67-year-old Vietnam veteran, and his 70-year-old wife Tommie J. Moore were found dead on the kitchen floor, police said. The couple had been married for more than 20 years.

An autopsy Saturday found that Ira Moore died of a gunshot wound to the head, and Tommie Moore died of a gunshot wound to the head and multiple stab wounds, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Both of their deaths were ruled homicides.

Berwyn police and the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating. Anyone with information on the fatalities is asked to contact Detective Thomas Tate at (708) 795-2164 or the Berwyn Police Department at (708) 795-5600.
