A man died Thursday afternoon, nearly a full day after he was shot in the head during a drive-by attack in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

About 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. 25-year-old Burton Benton was in the 500 block of North Homan when someone in a black car opened fire, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Benton was struck in the head and taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

Area North detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.
