A man was critically wounded when a group of people beat and shot him Monday afternoon in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The 23-year-old man was sitting with a 22-year-old woman about 2:40 p.m. inside a vehicle in the 2600 block of South Drake when a group of four to eight males walked up, according to Chicago Police. During a verbal argument, one of the suspects opened the vehicle’s passenger-side door, pulled the man out and the group started to beat him.

The woman told investigators she drove away in the vehicle when she saw that one of the suspects had a gun, police said. The man was shot in the back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Authorities initially reported that he was critically wounded, but his condition was listed as “fair” by Tuesday.

The vehicle’s rear window and driver’s-side window were broken by gunfire, but the woman was not injured, police said.

Area Central detectives were investigating.
