A man was wounded in a shooting Wednesday night in the University Village neighborhood on the Near West Side.

The 36-year-old was walking on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain about 11 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Ashland, according to Chicago police.

He was shot in his back and was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Area Central detectives were investigating.
