Charges are pending for a 15-year-old boy who shot himself at the scene of a retail theft Monday afternoon in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side.

About 2:30 p.m., the teen was searched for weapons after he was caught stealing from a shop in the 7500 block of North Clark Street, according to Chicago police.

A gun on him discharged by accident, causing a minor skin irritation to his inner right thigh, police said. He did not suffer a gunshot wound.

The 15-year-old was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston for treatment and arrested upon release, police said. His weapon was recovered.
