Chicago critics name ‘Parasite’ the best film of 2019

Echoing most of North America’s film review groups, the Chicago Film Critics Association on Saturday named “Parasite” the year’s best movie.

The South Korean social satire also was honored as best foreign film, and director Bong Joon Ho and the film’s screenwriters were chosen as the best in their categories.

The selection of “Parasite” puts the Chicago reviewers in sync with critics’ groups from Los Angeles, Atlanta, Phoenix, Detroit, Boston and Washington, D.C.

Also scoring four awards was director Greta Gerwig’s take on the classic novel “Little Women.” The movie, opening Christmas Day in Chicago, won for adapted screenplay (by Gerwig), original score, costume design and the work of supporting actress Florence Pugh.

The lead acting awards went to Adam Driver of “Marriage Story” and Lupita Nyong’o of “Us.” Brad Pitt was named best supporting actor for his work in “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” also cited for art direction.

“Apollo 11” was declared the best documentary and “Toy Story 4” the best animated feature.
