A preliminary investigation suggests that the toddler found a loaded handgun and was struck in the hand when it went off.

A toddler suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday in south suburban Glenwood after finding a loaded gun, according to preliminary information from police.

Officers were seen about noon responding to a home in the 100 block of State Street. In a statement posted to Facebook about 3 p.m., Glenwood police said that a toddler at the home was shot in the hand.

The toddler’s condition was not immediately known.

Police said the toddler’s family was cooperating with the investigation, but have not released additional information.
