A man attempted to abduct a 5-year-old girl Saturday afternoon from a backyard in the South Side Brighton Park neighborhood.

The girl was playing in a backyard adjacent to an alley in the 3500 block of South Mozart Street about 4:30 p.m. when a man came in to the backyard and told the girl to “come here,” according to a community alert from Area Central detectives.

The man tried to abduct the child, but was “ultimately unsuccessful,” police said. He ran back to the alley and got into a black vehicle that headed southbound in the alley toward 36th Street.

Police describe the suspect as a 25-35 year old Hispanic male with long black hair covering his ears, a moustache and possibly a goatee. He was wearing a blue hat and armed with a black handgun.

Anyone with information about the attempted abduction should contact detectives at (312) 747-8380.
