A recent analysis of Census data from demographer William Frey at the Brookings Institution shows a trend of city populations outpacing their neighboring suburbs for many of the largest U.S. metro areas. In Chicago, suburban growth barely outpaced the city’s growth from 2012-13, 0.3% in the suburbs compared to 0.2% within the city limits.
