(ELGIN) An Elgin man is charged with stabbing his wife in the torso during a domestic disturbance Monday night in the northwest suburb.

Rigoberto Catalan, 56, is charged with one count of aggravated domestic battery for the alleged attack in the 600 block of Shenandoah Trail, Elgin police said in a release.

Officers were called to the home about 7:25 p.m. and found both Catalan and the 42-year-old woman seriously hurt, police said.

Investigators found Catalan stabbed her during a domestic-related dispute, and also inflicted injuries to himself, police claim. Both of them remain hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Catalan remains under police guard at the hospital, and will appear in bond court at a later date, police said.
