Vita M. Bibbs, 47, was pronounced dead 3:50 a.m. Thursday at Community Hospital in Munster, according to the Lake County coroner’s office. His autopsy results were pending.

Bibbs was taken to the hospital about 2 a.m. Wednesday after he was pulled from a fire at Park West Apartments, 1108 Reyone Dr., according to Griffith police.

Officers quickly entered the building and began evacuating its occupants, police said. Two officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after they rescued a mother and her baby from the top floor of the three-story building.

Another person who lived in a different unit initially refused medical treatment, but later asked to be hospitalized as well, police said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but police said the kitchen stove could not be ruled out as the point of origin.
