Several police officers were taken to hospitals Thursday after suffering possible heat stroke during the funeral of Chicago police Officer Ella French.
Four police officers and a teenager standing outside St. Rita of Cascia Chapel, where French’s funeral was held Thursday, were overcome by the heat, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. All were expected to recover.
“This is probably the largest police funeral I’ve seen in many years, and many officers were outside in direct sunlight in full dress uniform,” Langford said.
The city sent several cooling buses and had people passing out bottles of water, Langford said.
